As a pianist, Pletnev is unparalleled at coloration and brilliance, and his skills are on spectacular display in Scarlatti’s sonatas. The latter’s sonatas are in some way similar to preludes: highly musically compressed, quirky, thematically fragmentary, harmonically daring (notice how in their second halves the sonatas zip off in directions quite impossible to anticipate), rhythmically taut, virtuosic, and featuring a joyously reckless merger of Spanish/Portuguese/Italian styles. Pletnev takes these with appropriate playfulness, making some very small cuts to the material and adding doubling, chords and sustaining trills where appropriate.

13:08 — K.96* (the textural shading Pletnev pulls off here is remarkable — the rapid shifts in tone are handled beautifully)

21:28 — K.247 (almost recitative in nature, played with great rhythmic freedom. Also lots of parallel fifths.)
28:59 — K.380* (a pretty common encore — Pletnev provides us with some of the most sedate and delicate hunting horns ever — listen out for all those open fifths)
34:43 — K.519* (there’s a very Vivaldi-like drama to this — listen for those repeated/interleaved musical cells and urgent repeated notes)
