Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question…
Q: Hi Andrew, I’m a long time fan of the guitar lessons you post on YouTube and I wanted to ask you a question about the songs you write for them. Your music is really melodic and always has a strong flow. It’s like the melody has a long arc across an entire section, (i.e., Verse or Chorus). Could you make a lesson with tips on how to compose like that? I want to eventually have my melodies flowing as strongly as yours.

A: Musicians who compose music that has a melody flowing across a long melodic arc work for a long time on creating their melodies. I remember when I was a teenager, learning guitar, I was always trying to build longer and more flowing melodies. I’d work out sections of scales in several areas of the guitar neck. And, I’d focus a lot of attention to the music building as it moved section to section. I became interested in learning several of the Bach exercises for viola and violin, (i.e., Sonata in G Minor: Presto). Bach’s studies inspired me to look further into how melodies could have a longer flow. In this lesson, we’ll look at ways that a melody can stretch over a longer arc. We’ll work on this using different intervals & arpeggios, as well as, harmonies, and we’ll also look at how rhythm plays a role in this arc as well. Enjoy!
